Natural Hair Care Tips for Jamaican Hair

Jamaican hair is beautiful, versatile and strong — but textured, coily and curly hair also has real needs, especially in our heat and humidity. The key to healthy natural hair comes down to one word: moisture. Here's how to keep your hair hydrated, protected and thriving.

Why Natural Hair Craves Moisture

Coily and curly hair has bends and twists along each strand, which makes it harder for your scalp's natural oils to travel down the hair. That means the ends — the oldest, most fragile part — dry out first. Dry hair is brittle hair, and brittle hair breaks. Everything below is about getting moisture in and keeping it locked.

The LOC / LCO Method

This is the gold standard for moisture retention:

If your hair is lower porosity, flip the last two (LCO) so oils don't block the cream.

Pro Tip: Moisturize on damp hair, not soaking wet or bone dry. Damp hair absorbs and holds product best.

Build a Simple Wash Routine

1. Pre-poo

Before washing, coat your hair in oil or a conditioner to protect it from the drying effect of shampoo.

2. Cleanse gently

Use a sulphate-free shampoo or co-wash. Sulphates strip too much, leaving coily hair parched. Wash your scalp; let the suds clean your length as they rinse.

3. Deep condition

At least once a week, deep condition — ideally with a little heat (a warm towel or a plastic cap in the sun works great in Jamaica). This is non-negotiable for healthy natural hair.

4. Moisturize & seal

Finish with the LOC method while hair is damp.

Protective Styling in the Heat

Braids, twists, bantu knots and buns tuck away your fragile ends and cut down on daily manipulation and breakage. A few rules:
